History of Merriweather Post

When Merriweather Post was built in in 1967, it was originally intended to be the summer home of the National Symphony Orchestra. Located in between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, the pavilion was nestled in 40 acres of forest that is now called Symphony Woods.

Before long, the venue opened up to host a variety of artists throughout the year. It has since hosted some of the biggest and best names in rock, country, rhythm and blues, pop, jazz, hip hop, alternative, electronica and, of course, classical.

Big names that have performed at Merriweather Post include Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet and more. Side note: Jimmy Buffett has reportedly performed at the venue more than any other artist. At last count, he’s played more than 42 shows there.

Not your typical concert venue

For starters, when you wait in line to enter the venue ahead of the concert, you are not in a line that stretches around a huge building surrounded by concrete. Instead, you line up along a path that is flanked by grass and towering trees. It sets the tone to make the event as relaxed as you’d like for it to be. Upon entering the venue, you can either set up on the lawn with your blanket or low-backed lawn chair. Or if you have tickets for a seat under the pavilion, make your way there at your leisure. There isn’t a bad seat in the “house.” In recent years, the venue brought in more than 700 truckloads of dirt to create a slope that would offer a great view of the stage from the lawn.

Merriweather Post has all of the typical vendors and concessions you would at a coliseum, including concessions and T-shirt vendors. For the convenience of its concert-goers, the venue recently tripled the number of its restrooms.
