Innkeepers
Susan and David Balderson have owned the Wayside Inn since October,
1998. They opened the Inn full-time in October, 1999. Prior to
purchasing the Inn, Susan and David had lived in Ellicott City since
1987. Both are professionals with careers that have given them good
background skills that in turn allowed them to open and operate a bed
and breakfast. After marrying in 1979, Susan and David relocated to San
Diego, CA. for seven years. They both embarked on new careers: Susan in
accounting with a local medical office and David in sales with McCormick
& Company. In 1986, they returned to Maryland via David's transfer with
McCormick and soon settled in the Ellicott City. Susan registered at
Towson University to finish a degree, which she began during the "San
Diego" years and graduated cum laude with a BS in Accounting. She went
to work full time with a large accounting firm, then known as C.W. Amos
& Company, in their entrepreneurial business division. She sat for the
CPA exam that fall and passed it the first time! After several years of
working with smaller and new or "emerging" businesses, Susan moved into
the field of bankruptcy, first with a Chapter 13 Trustee and later with
the Justice Department's Office of the U.S. Trustee. Susan currently
works as a financial analyst in the Baltimore office. Some of her duties
include overseeing two Chapter 13 Trustees and several Chapter 7
Trustees, financial oversight of Chapter 11 debtors, and special
forensic accounting projects when needed. She also "moonlights" as the
"brains behind the brawn" of the Wayside Inn.
David's career with McCormick began in San Diego when he was a sales
representative with the greatest territory in the country: the Southern
California coastline from the Mexican border to Orange County, going
only one mile inland! As his career with McCormick progressed, he was
transferred to McCormick's headquarters in Baltimore, where his focus
shifted from sales to marketing. He concentrated in new product
development and new business management. David was the key player in
taking the Supermarket Food Service project from inception to almost
four million dollars in sales in a few short years. He took cooking
classes at the Culinary Institute of America and at Baltimore Culinary
College. He has worked in kitchens at Marriott Corporate Dining
facilities and other large facilities at Georgetown University, Loyola
College in Chicago, and the Philadelphia Main Post Office to name just a
few. He has been both a panelist and a featured speaker at conventions
for the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and the American Meat Institute
(AMI). He is now the full-time Innkeeper and Chef for the Wayside Inn.
2004 is a year of anniversaries for Susan, David and the Inn. Susan &
David celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in August, and the
Wayside Inn celebrates its 5th year of operations by the Baldersons in
October. Susan and David invite you to come to the
Wayside Inn to celebrate your special occasion or just to treat yourself
to a relaxing night away from reality in an historic, luxurious 18th
Century home.
